Over a decade ago, a group of friends came together with the shared vision of establishing a competitive volleyball club. In the early days, they were simply a group of friends meeting regularly at a social beginner session, united by a shared love for the game. But as their confidence grew and their ambition sharpened, those casual evenings began to feel like the beginning of something bigger. What started as friendly rallies and laughter soon evolved into a bold decision: to transform their passion into purpose. Determined to test their limits and raise their standard, they set out to establish a formal club, one that would not only refine their skills, but also earn its place in London’s competitive volleyball leagues.
The turning point came in 2016, the year ONYX Volleyball Club officially came to life. What had once been an idea shared among friends now had a name, an identity, and a clear sense of purpose. Launching with two teams — ONYX Men and ONYX Women — the club stepped confidently onto the competitive stage, entering Division 2 of the London Volleyball League. It was a modest beginning, but one driven by ambition, belief, and the determination to build something lasting.
Dominating the local scene!
What followed was nothing short of remarkable. Season after season, both teams rose to the challenge, claiming their respective division titles year after year. With each promotion, ONYX continued its steady ascent through the ranks, until ultimately earning its place in the Premier Division of the London Volleyball League – a testament to the club’s relentless drive and commitment to excellence.
From its original two squads, the club steadily expanded to five teams, each competing across different divisions and catering to a wide range of skill levels.

Having established its dominance within London’s competitive scene, ONYX soon set its sights beyond the capital. With its original ambitions realised, the club embraced a new challenge — stepping onto the national stage.

Two teams (Men and Women) went on to represent ONYX in the Volleyball England National Cup and Shield tournaments, and National Volleyball League, marking a proud new chapter in the club’s journey and signalling its arrival as a force not only in London, but across the country.

Going International!
With its reputation firmly established in London’s volleyball scene, ONYX seized an extraordinary opportunity to take its game international. In 2019, the club was invited to compete in Novosibirsk, Russia, at the Nations Cup – a milestone that showcased its talent on a global stage. The journey continued in 2024 with another prestigious invitation, this time to Chiba, Japan, further cementing ONYX’s standing as a club that thrives both at home and abroad.
This month, ONYX embarks on another exciting international chapter, as some of its members head to Okinawa, Japan, to compete in the Nations Asia Pacific Mixed Tournament. We wish them all the best!
How about the kids?!
Driven by a passion to inspire the next generation of volleyball players, ONYX launched its Junior Development Program. This year, the club took it a step further by hosting friendly tournaments with other clubs, creating a platform where young athletes can gain invaluable experience and enjoy the thrill of competing in a supportive, yet challenging, environment.

Yet for ONYX, success has never been measured by trophies alone. Beyond the competition, the club has always placed equal value on something less tangible but far more enduring – a genuine sense of family. With members hailing from countries across the globe, ONYX has grown into far more than a volleyball club. It became a vibrant, multicultural community where people connect beyond the court – forming friendships, exchanging stories, and sharing languages and traditions from around the world. True to its roots, ONYX continues to nurture the social spirit that brought the club together. Regular events and parties are organised to bring members from all teams together, fostering connections, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the volleyball court.
